Vocabulary in everyday life

To try and make learning words a reaL "LIFE" situation, I ask pupils to keep a list of all the words they encountered in the previouos week. They bring them to the lessons and they are discussed with the whole class. Thus everyone gets to augment their list.

It's very good that you discuss about the new words in your class. But sometimes teaching  the usage of the new word is ignored by some teachers.

We can't learn a new word if we don't know how to use it.

As an extension to what you do, I have my students use their vocabulary lists in writing a paragraph or essay. When we read or do grammar exercises, I ask them to use their words. After a while they become part of their active vocabulary.

I also tell them whether these words are slang, formal, informal, or academic. In this way, they realize early on that words can be used in some contexts not others. Rania
